Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition where the oil glands in your eyelids become clogged or blocked, leading to burning or itchy eyes, redness, and dry eyes. It happens when the natural oil (meibum) thickens and fails to flow properly, causing your tears to dry up too fast. Some of the common symptoms of this chronic condition are the following:
- Burning, itching, or a gritty feeling like dust is in your eye
- Red, sore, or swollen eyelids
- Blurry vision that gets better when you blink
- Watery eyes or crusty discharge on the eyelashes
- Frequent styes or chalazions (painless eyelid bumps)
Our office has different therapies to help manage and treat dry eyes and meibomian gland dysfunction.
TearCare is an in-office, 15-minute medical procedure used to treat dry eye disease caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. It works by applying precise, software-controlled heat therapy to the eyelids followed by manual gland clearing
With the revolutionary treatments of Forma-I (RF) and Lumecca-I (IPL), we can help manage meibomian gland dysfunction by addressing the root of the problem while providing quick and lasting relief, getting you back to seeing clearly and comfortably. The RF targets the impaction of the Meibomian glands by helping to melt the oils causing the clogged glands while the IPL treats the source of the inflammation by coagulating the tiny abnormal blood vessels surrounding the glands.
Look right behind the upper eye lashes. We shouldn’t see those little pointy guys. The oil coming out of those glands should be more like olive oil than crisco.
- When we give the lid a little pressure around :08-:013 the oil starts to come out properly.
- Now look at the :25 mark. Try looking through that oil sheen. No bueno.
- It all adds up to dry, irritated, red eyes with fluctuating vision. Clear. Blurry. Clear. Blurry.
We love taking the time and utilizing technology to educate our patients on the why of what we are doing.
